Alex Foxley is a British multidisciplinary designer. Graduating from Norwich University of the Arts with a degree in commercial photography. Alex turned his hand to learning other areas of art and design including illustration and animation. His style is usually led by bright colours, crisp line work and bold, eye-catching patterns inspired by the 80's.

Tell us a fun fact about you I moved to Barcelona the same week as graduating and found myself working at illustration studio 'Hey Studio' shortly after! A dream come true!

How did you get into illustration? Studying photography at university and college I had no real exposure to illustration. Knowing how competitive the creative industry is for a photographer I decided to start teaching myself illustration in my second year and I have never looked back.

Who or what inspires you the most? I am mostly inspired by the 80's era. I love everything about it from the fashion, furniture, music, film and even video games.

What does a typical day look like for you? I like to get up quite early and have my morning ritual done and out the way so I can get started with my day to day tasks. Whilst I am still in the productive mindset, I will generally give myself a list of tasks I want to achieve by the end of the day. I usually become less productive later on in the day so I aim to get everything finished around 5pm so I can dedicate some time away from work.

What do you do when you have a creative block? I will tend to either take a break and go for a nice long walk or I will look back through my archive of work and see if there is anything from the past that can help influence my current project.

Top three clients you've worked with? Uniqlo, Jump from Paper and Barcelona City Council.

What tools (digital or not!) do you use to create your work? I mostly work with Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects for the majority of my work, however depending on the project I will sometimes use my iPad, camera or work with paper.

What's your favourite resource for inspiration? Recently, I have found a lot of really inspiring artists on Instagram. I think it is a great platform to be able to hunt for new talent, connect with people all across the globe and build a supportive community.

Do you have any tips for artists thinking of doing freelance? Be proactive and know your market! Research the industry extensively, finding out the best places for you to gain exposure and gain opportunities. I think being a freelance designer/illustrator is just as much about making the work as it is establishing connections and marketing your work, so make sure you have the balance right.

What would your dream project be? Working mostly with digital I would love to work on a large scale mural or installation.

How can fans keep up-to-date with your work? Instagram
