A graphic designer and illustrator from Manchester, Alexandra Francis, has studied both fine art and graphic design. Alexandra loves mixing both practises to make colourful illustrations of animals and people. She is constantly trying to experiment with styles and enjoys getting inspiration from art museums and galleries.

Tell us a fun fact about you I can't ride a bike - I want to learn though!

How did you get into illustration? When I was younger I used to drive my parents crazy drawing on the wall. I grew up loving art and went on to study fine art at university.

Who or what inspires you the most? My friends inspire me a lot. It sounds cliche but seeing them thrive and succeed makes me want to do well myself.

What does a typical day look like for you? I wake up, hop on a tram and go to work in a design studio in Manchester. I make illustrations and website designs. When I get home I draw, paint and make illustrations on my laptop. I'm lucky enough to love what I do at work and at home.

What do you do when you have a creative block? Go outside, watch a movie - just get away from the screen. Anything can inspire you, even if it is going to the pub.

Top three clients you've worked with? Im still very new to illustration but I really enjoyed working with a nordic outdoor swimming pool. I got to make some cool illustrations of people swimming and wave patterns.

What tools (digital or not!) do you use to create your work? I use a mix of digital and non digital tools. I always start with a sketch and then use my Wacom tablet to draw in Photoshop.

What's your favourite resource for inspiration? Art Galleries. There's so much inspiration not just in the artworks but how they are framed, exhibited - even the colour of the walls in the galleries.

Do you have any tips for artists thinking of doing freelance? Keep putting your work out there. If its Instagram, Twitter or Tumblr. If you're consistent someone is bound to see your work.

What would your dream project be? My dream project would be to illustrate posters for a video game! I love the artwork from games like Journey and Firewatch.

How can fans keep up-to-date with your work? Instagram
