Elena Resko is an illustrator based in Berlin, where she draw and drinks too much coffee on a daily basis. Elena enjoys exploring the world around her but as a work-from-couch person, she also tries her hardest to find joys in the simplicity of everyday flow. Elena's work prizes both the "big" nature and the happiness in small things. Vibrant colors and whimsical shapes form the basis to her pictures.

Tell us a fun fact about you In my past life I was a koala.

How did you get into illustration? Graphic design which was my field of study suddenly seemed lacking the emotion I wanted to see in my work, so I pursued something I wouldn't dare starting from.

Who or what inspires you the most? I have a cheesy answer to this question, but inspiration is everywhere, be it a big travel or some down daydreaming time on your couch. Nature never disappoints as well.

What does a typical day look like for you? Just a sequence - coffee - work - coffee - work 🙂 In the evening I switch for tea and drawing for side/personal projects or reading graphic novels.

What do you do when you have a creative block? If it's here while I still need to get things done, I just go out, catch a nice walk and usually end up buying a piece of cake and getting back to try again. On a long term basis, I try to get as far as possible from the things I do at the moment and not consume my usual visual info any more. Just changing my environment and feeding the brain with something completely different usually helps a lot.

What tools (digital or not!) do you use to create your work? Because I can't actually draw anything nice with any type of traditional media, my work is fully digital and I recently totally eliminated paper sketching as well. It feels good not to through out numerous trash bins of bad drawing attempts.

What's your favourite resource for inspiration? Random flipping through art books in book shops, I just dig in without any direction and always find something fascinating.

Do you have any tips for artists thinking of doing freelance? Think twice 🙂 Of course it's a joke, but apart from having this beautiful sparkling picture of being your own boss and doing all the things you like, you still need to see the dark side upfront. It's good to be prepared and know that it's a rather long path to become a successful freelancer and it might be a lot of frustration, fear, and sometimes loneliness on the way.

What would your dream project be? I would love to do illustrations for packaging and please let it be wine or chocolate 🙂
