After receiving a B.A. Honours in Fine Art from the National College of Art & Design in Dublin in 2004, Holly Pereira spent 7 years practicing as a painter, with exhibitions and residencies in Dublin, London, Berlin & Singapore. Hungry, after years as a starving artist, Holly moved into illustration in 2011 where she discovered the exciting world of illustrated type. She returned to education, graduating from The Irish School of Animation in Ballyfermot in 2015. In 2016, she brought sign painting into her practice, and larger scale murals and wall drawings. Major loves are lettering (of course), books and cats.

Tell us a fun fact about you I made a record under my murderous alter-ego, Queen Herod, in 2011 as a 30th birthday present to myself.

How did you get into illustration? I was a broke painter, and got sick of waitressing.

Who or what inspires you the most? Vintage typography, especially from the 1940s and 50s.

What does a typical day look like for you? Coffee, answer emails, draw letters, tea, siesta, more work. Walk. Netflix or band practice.

What do you do when you have a creative block? Dance to 90s R'nB in my studio.

Top three clients you've worked with? National Gallery of Ireland Education Dept, Tito, Facebook Ireland

What tools (digital or not!) do you use to create your work? Pencil and wacom tablet for lettering, One Shot for signage, or Montana 94 for murals.

What's your favourite resource for inspiration? Pinterest or Instagram

Do you have any tips for artists thinking of doing freelance? Keep your day job till you don't need to. For me, nothing kills creativity as much as being hungry and stressed about paying the electricity bill.

What would your dream project be? Opening titles for a Wes Anderson or Matteo Garrone film.

How can fans keep up-to-date with your work? Instagram
