Born in Thailand and based in Chicago, Illinois, Jane Wongjirad is a full-time senior graphic designer/art director. At night, she’s a lettering artist who goes by Cottonwood312. She loves flourishes, flowers and fun. She wants to spread out positive messages and hopes that her arts cheer up others.

Tell us a fun fact about you Recently, I became a mom to a handsome 11-months old Border Collie mix. He's such a good boy.

How did you get into illustration? I love drawing and art at a very young age. I didn't go to art school but I always pick up a pencil to sketch on something. I work in graphic design and art direction so that skill comes in handy. I started to explore hand-lettering couple years ago. Now it becomes part of my day.

Who or what inspires you the most? Nature. Traveling. Putting myself in other cultures.

What does a typical day look like for you? With a coffee cup in hand, I'm usually at my desk by 9 am. I work from home so I can sit here all day long. Though I try to break up my day by walking the dog or getting up to grab snacks/water.

What do you do when you have a creative block? I try to get some inspirations from other artists on IG or by flipping through design magazines. Other times, I just walk away from it.

Top three clients you've worked with? A software company, a drug management company and a company that makes chewing gums.

What tools (digital or not!) do you use to create your work? Paper and pencil, and my lovely iPad Pro.

What's your favourite resource for inspiration? Instagram, Pinterest, Communication Arts magazines, museums.

Do you have any tips for artists thinking of doing freelance? Currently I'm a full-time employee but I freelanced for years. Freelance doesn't mean 'free' or low-cost service so know your worth and manage your time. Also, you only want to work with someone who wants to work with you. It's ok to say no.

What would your dream project be? Seeing my work on print ads, packagings or billboards somewhere.

How can fans keep up-to-date with your work? Instagram
