Jess Phoenix is a designer/illustrator living in Seattle who combats the often grey weather by making vibrant art — the brighter the better! She uses floral imagery as a vehicle to explore colour, often making up the flowers and leaves as she goes along. She also loves to design patterns, make illustrations, sing karaoke, and pet cats.
I may be good at creating art, but I don’t know how to swim, whistle, or snap my fingers!
Both of my parents studied art, so it was in my DNA! They went more of the graphic design route, but I’ve tried to have my feet both in illustration and design.
colour! I love seeing how colour can change a piece. Any time there’s a colour combination in a piece that is so bright it almost vibrates, that’s when I’m the most excited.
I work as a designer/illustrator for a gift product company, so my days are spent designing fun products for them. But in the evenings and on weekends, I try to create as much of my own art as I can. So a typical day for me is jam-packed!
I usually talk with my husband, who is also an artist ( http://tomdeslongchamp.com ) or I look around for images that inspire me — usually on Pinterest or Instagram. I love the creative communities I’ve discovered through those platforms, and the countless amazing/talented artists.
Working with Tattly was the most exciting format I’ve seen my artwork in. Just behind that was getting to see tex of my designs turned into embroidery patterns through DMC. I also got to design a monthly box for Birchbox last year, which turned out beautiful and they gave me a free 3-month subscription.
I draw out my design, then I use tracing paper and create every flower petal, leaf and stem with either marker or paint. After that, I scan the pieces, compose them in Photoshop, and add colour.

Find a community of people you trust to show your art to/bounce ideas off of. If they are also freelancers, that can be helpful when trying to do estimates for jobs. I have a few people that I am always emailing to ask “how much should I charge for that??”
I’d love to work with a fabric company, some day. And relatedly, seeing my art/patterns on home goods would be amazing -ideally for a bigger brand like Anthropologie.

Recently, I became a mom to a handsome 11-months old Border Collie mix. He’s such a good boy.
I love drawing and art at a very young age. I didn’t go to art school but I always pick up a pencil to sketch on something. I work in graphic design and art direction so that skill comes in handy. I started to explore hand-lettering couple years ago. Now it becomes part of my day.
Nature. Traveling. Putting myself in other cultures.
With a coffee cup in hand, I’m usually at my desk by 9 am. I work from home so I can sit here all day long. Though I try to break up my day by walking the dog or getting up to grab snacks/water.
I try to get some inspirations from other artists on IG or by flipping through design magazines. Other times, I just walk away from it.
A software company, a drug management company and a company that makes chewing gums.
Paper and pencil, and my lovely iPad Pro.
Instagram, Pinterest, Communication Arts magazines, museums.
Currently I’m a full-time employee but I freelanced for years. Freelance doesn’t mean ‘free’ or low-cost service so know your worth and manage your time. Also, you only want to work with someone who wants to work with you. It’s ok to say no.
Seeing my work on print ads, packagings or billboards somewhere.

I´m addicted to asian food, chocolate, trench-coats, Frank Ccean, Sampha and James Blake, my sneakers, books, art, breakfast, grocery shopping and I‘m leaving a crumb trail!
I was always painting and drawing so it seemed like a logic career path to me.
Plants and flowers of course but traveling and my every day surroundings are always a great way to get inspired!
Starting with a great breakfast afterwards checking and answering emails, and working and preparing orders. Painting in the afternoon and working on Instagram in the evening.
Just stop forcing it and try to use the time to meet friends and have long walks!
Recently I did flowers for a big company which I really enjoyed creating. Winning a design contest to have a textile design with Urban Outfitters was amazing when I started out, or I also enjoyed creating an entire print collection for a local surfwear company!
Procreate and Photoshop.
Pinterest or I also love to check out old books on fleamarkets!
Get yourself out there and start networking!
Designing for big fashion houses like Gucci or Chloe or just have my stuff on big billboards in NYC would be awesome! Having my own home decor collection with ikea would also be perfect!
