Lucy Llewellyn is freelance graphic designer based in Newport, South Wales. She likes to combine a love for hand drawn type with illustration and colour to make quirky lettering pieces. Lucy enjoys listening to music while working often sings along badly. She's fuelled by tea and biscuits, with bourbons being her firm favourite.

Tell us a fun fact about you I can make my eyeball make a squelchy noise and my fiancé hates it!

How did you get into illustration? I was always a creative kid and loved nothing more than getting lost in my imagination. That led me to studying art at school before I eventually progressed onto a Graphic Communication course at Uni. I started to learn about typography there and my passion for hand drawn type was born.

Who or what inspires you the most? I find inspiration from everywhere I go. Seeing an old sign in the street, graffiti, typography on a record sleeve, battered stickers on a lamppost, the design on a beer can, book covers, packaging, the colour of a flower. It’s all around and never ending, you just have to keep your eyes peeled. I like to take a photo of whatever has caught my eye for future reference. My fiancé is also a very talented illustrator who offers great support if ever I’m feeling stuck. He has a completely different style to me but just being creative in our studio together is hugely motivational.

What does a typical day look like for you? My day starts on the yoga mat in my living room attempting to follow a Yoga class with an Adriene Youtube video. Shower. Breakfast. Emails. Finish anything I haven’t the day before. Sketch out new ideas. I always listen to something while I work; lately it’s been Drunk on Lettering podcasts. Those girls are hilarious! After work is done for the day, I like to cook and curl up on the sofa with Ian and chill with some TV.

What do you do when you have a creative block? I’ve learned that when I am feeling creative block, I need to get away from the computer, and do something completely unrelated. Doing a mundane task or relaxing often lets the mind wander and that’s when the ideas will flow. Take a bubble bath. Do the hoovering. (Dusting and ironing reserved for a particularly bad block!) Cook. Go for a walk. Watch a skateboard video; I can’t skate but I love the mentality of trying a trick and slamming hard but not giving up and going again and again until it’s landed.

Top three clients you've worked with? They’ve all been fun to work with. I’m fairly new to freelancing so I’m just happy to be here!

What tools (digital or not!) do you use to create your work? Good old fashioned pencil and paper to start, always. I enjoy using pens, markers, paint and inks. I love working traditionally and digitally and use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to design. More recently I’ve been trying out Procreate on the iPad Pro.

What's your favourite resource for inspiration? The Internet has no end of resources with websites like Instagram, Dribbble, Behance and Pinterest all offering creative inspiration. I also like to go through my little library of books.

Do you have any tips for artists thinking of doing freelance? Trust you gut and go for it! The best thing I ever did was leave a job that I knew wasn’t right for me to pursue the things that made me happy. Sure it’s hard but if you consistently put the work out there that you want to be hired for, eventually you will. It's also wise to have some savings behind you before you make the leap.

What would your dream project be? Any kind of large scale lettering mural with an uplifting, positive message to make people smile.
