An Interview with Milan Abad

Milan Abad is an illustrator and designer with a passion for fashion, popular culture, branding, magazine and editorial, music and events, film and lifestyle.

Just Black is his alter ego used for freelance, collaborations and personal work. His focus is on giving bespoke specialised solutions to clients through illustration, design and art direction. "The goal is to create both beautiful yet valuable work that both me and the client are proud of, without betraying my tone, humour, energy or ideals in my work."

Tell us a fun fact about you. I handed Dizee Rascal a loo roll once in the VIP toilets of a festival.

Top three clients you've worked with? UKF, Sony Music, Ogilvy

How did you get into illustration? I didn't have a clue it even existed. I was feeling lame at art college with graphic design when my tutor showed me it, and saved my ass.

What tools (digital or not!) do you use to create your work? Pencil, Ink, Fineliner, Textured paper, Photoshop, Illustrator, Wacom Tablet.

Who or what inspires you the most? Among my favourite modern illustrators, I am highly inspired by film, photography, old renaissance art, music, fashion, creative writing, interior design, architecture, personal experiences, people, travel, neon, 80's retro and popular culture.

What's your favourite website for inspiration? Pinterest & Designinspiration to name a couple.

What would your dream project be? Create a masterpiece branding collection for a brand like Nike. To get commissioned to travel the world illustrating for a fashion brand.
